Anna Agnes Nerino, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 in the company of her adoring children. She was the loving wife of the late Alfred (“Red”) Nerino.
Born July 24, 1936 in Reading on Strong Alley, Anna was the proud daughter of immigrant parents, Albert and Anna (Smolko) Maslar.
She graduated from Reading Catholic High School in 1953 and her inherent nature to care for others led her to a very fulfilling career in nursing where she continued her passion for helping others heal. She graduated from Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in Allentown in 1956. Anna began her nursing career at Reading Hospital and eventually retired from Wernersville State Hospital.
Anna was deeply loved throughout her lifetime by her family and friends, and she welcomed all into her home. A true Matriarch, she was full of grace and patience. Anna valued her Catholic faith and traditions and, after God, cherished family above all. She was an active member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church at the time of her passing.
Among her favorite activities were watching sunrises on the beach, traveling to the Midwest to visit family and friends, and hosting Penn State watch parties. An annual highlight was the summer week in Dewey Beach with the Shaners and Shemanskis, which created lifelong memories.
Mom (Baba) was an excellent cook. With recipes passed down from her mother, she took particular pride in traditional Slovak dishes. Baba shared these traditions and so many more with her family. From a pot of broth to Italian gravy, to her infamous “Babacinkas”, her culinary delights will be remembered by all.
She will be remembered as Auntie Anne (Kresna) to her nieces, nephews, and godchildren, and she will be remembered as Baba to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so many more.
Anna is survived by her children: Michael Nerino (Sarah Gray), Alfred Nerino, Jr. (Ann), Marianne Hufford (Tom), and Eric Nerino, grandchildren: Meg (Paul), Lewie (Felicity), Jonathan (Missy), Sarah (Matt), Tommy (Jenna), Kate (Mitch), Kevin, Nicky, Hana (Darian), Maria, Elle, Luke, and Emma, and great-grandchildren: Andrew, Lucy, Rory, Autumn, Tripp, and MJ.
She was preceded in death by her honey of 56 years, Alfred (“Red”) Nerino, their infant son, Kevin, her daughter-in-law, Sarah, and by her siblings: Albert Maslar, William Maslar and James Maslar.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Cyril and Methodius, 449 S 6th Street, Reading, PA 19602. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will take place at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
