Obituary for Barbara Laverne Martello

Barbara LaVerne (Lien) Martello passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 13, 2021, surrounded by the love of family members.

She is with the Lord she loved and the love of her life, her husband Patsy.

Her family grieves this great loss but finds solace in her gifts to us: our identity as a family, our faith, our love for laughter, as well as wit and sarcasm, baseball, cooking and eating together, music and dancing and a strong love of country.

Her 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren called her Mammy, and she delighted in sharing in their milestones and would ignore her own needs to be with them whether it was to celebrate or comfort. Her love for her own was deep and wide and constant.

Many may remember a helpful smile when shopping at the original Boscov store at 9th and Pike Streets, having been hired by Solomon Boscov in the 1960’s and then working at Boscov’s North. Others may remember her caring approach in the Emergency Room at St. Joseph’s Hospital for over 16 years. She went out of her way to work on Christmas Day and other holidays volunteering so that the younger staff could be home with their families.

In addition, her life included a love of travel, great friends, and a commitment to her role as a lifelong NY Yankees fan.

She seemed larger than her 5’2” frame to all those who benefitted from her gifts. If something needed to be done, it was done with her whole heart. She was dedicated to the service of others regardless of what they needed from her. Babs was a tireless worker all throughout her life and led by example.

She is survived by her children Michele Martello Holub, Sinking Spring, PA; Michael Martello, husband of Pamela, San Clemente, CA; Maureen (Martello) Miller, wife of Neal Miller, Rehoboth Beach, DE; and Marla (Martello) Roman, wife of Dennis, Whitehall, PA; grandchildren: Matthew Holub, husband of Kelly, Parkesburg, PA; Carli (Miller) Henichek, wife of Kevin, Breinigsville, PA; Rachel (Holub) O’Donnell, wife of Mark, Sinking Spring, PA; Neali (Miller) Feimster, wife of James, Alburtis, PA; Michael Holub, Philadelphia, PA; Aaron Roman, Philadelphia, PA; Evan Roman, Philadelphia, PA; Jason Nash, husband of Lauren, Washington, MI; Scott Nash, husband of Michelle, Redwood City, CA; her great-grandchildren: Ava, Quinn, and Nora O’Donnell, Sinking Spring, PA; Jack and Maggie Holub, Parkesburg, PA; Zoe and Reece Henichek, Breinigsville, PA; Kellan and Nash Feimster, Alburtis, PA. Hudson and Hunter Nash, Washington, MI; and Connor and Kyle Nash, Redwood City, CA.

She is also survived by her beloved brother Emmett Marvin Lien, husband of Jackie, Leesport, PA.

She is predeceased by two sisters: Shirley (Lien) Filak, widow of Anthony Filak and Dolores (Lien) Noecker, widow of Denton Noecker.

She will be missed by many nieces and nephews who loved Aunt Babs with all their hearts.
