Brigitta Brand “BB” Mahanna

Brigitta Brand “BB” Mahanna, 82, of Wyomissing passed away on January 11, 2020 in her home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of John R. “Jack” Mahanna, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage in November.

BB was born in New Rochelle, NY to John G. and Ida R. (Barrett) Brand. She attended the University of Vermont where she earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1959; this was the first class in which women could earn engineering degrees. She was employed by General Electric where she proudly worked on the Unit Vector Calculator for NASA. Her love of numbers and sharp math mind was a defining characteristic throughout her life.

BB enjoyed playing bridge and volunteering for numerous organizations while living in Queens, NY; Norwalk, CT; Randolph, NJ and Roanoke, VA. She was committed to her Catholic faith and spent many years ministering to inmates through the Roanoke County Jail Ministry.

In addition to her husband Jack, she is survived by her daughter Mollie and her husband Jim Flahaven of South Portland, ME; her daughter Katie and her husband Jim Catchmark of Wyomissing, PA; her son Mike Mahanna and his wife Lindsey of Randolph, NJ; grandchildren Claire Flahaven, James Mahanna and Morgan Mahanna; and her brothers John G. I met Brigitta and Jack when I was on Staff at Our Lady of Nazareth. They were a lovely couple & very active in our Parish. Brigitta was in several of our Bible Study Groups and always had something to share. Those of you who know Brigitta know she likes to talk. She also help me as a Sponsor in RCIA too. She was always ready to help in any way she could. I always looked forward to when it was time her turn to bring a snack to share. She was such a good cook and also bought enough food to feed the whole class. Both Brigitta and Jack were doing Jail Ministry also. Great people.
She also served on Parish Council and of course was full of ideas on how the Church should be run. Ha Ha!
I used to see her after mass sitting in the chairs outside the office and I would set down and have a conversation with her. I'd say what's going on and she would say I'm waiting on Jack he is in the Chapel Praying. She would shrug her shoulders and just continue the conversation on another subject.
RIP my friend we miss you and we know you are entertaining the Angels with all of your wonderful stories.
