Obituary for C. Wilbur Love

C. Wilbur Love, 86, of Wernersville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2022, in Reading Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. A son of the late O. Lloyd and Bertha E. (Hathorn) Love, he was married for 61 wonderful years to the late Gloria (Wentzel) Love, who passed in 2018. He is also predeceased by a son Darrin, who died in 2015. Wilbur’s family takes great comfort knowing mom, dad and Darrin are now reunited again.

Wilbur graduated from the former Sinking Spring High School in 1954 and was a 1957 graduate of Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute. He served in the US Naval Reserve for eight years as a Hospital Corpsman.

Wilbur was a long-time resident of West Reading and Wyomissing boroughs, where he tirelessly served his communities in numerous capacities, including West Reading Borough Councilman, Recreation Board President, Chairman of the 4th of July and Bicentennial Committees, Volunteer Fireman, Wyomissing School District School Board Director for 24 years, as well as leadership positions in the Reading Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Berks County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Pennsylvania Junior Miss Pageant, and the Reading-Berks Basketball Oldtimers. Wilbur was one of those dedicated individuals who never said “no” when he was asked to help.

One of his greatest joys was to portray Santa Claus for various organizations, companies, municipalities and fire companies. Wilbur was Santa to thousands of kids for over 55 years.

He was also extremely successful in his professional life, working for Glidden Paints, Reading, for 54 years, retiring in 1997 as Regional Purchasing Manager. But nothing was more important to Wilbur than his family, and he and Gloria enjoyed traveling, especially on cruise ships to visit new places around the world.

Wilbur is survived by his daughters Sharon, widow of William Luyben, Wyomissing, and Rochelle, wife of Stanton Graeff, Wyomissing, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Nathaniel, Trevor and Elizabeth Luyben, and his step-grandson Kyle Graeff. Also surviving is his loving companion, Gloria Heisey. In addition to his wife and son, he was predeceased by a brother Theron D. Love.

We will celebrate Wilbur’s wonderful life Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 11:00am at St. John’s Reformed Church, 4001 Penn Avenue, Sinking Spring. Friends may call from 10:00-11:00am in the Church.
