Obituary for Carol A. Hinkel (Hartman)

Carol A. (Hartman) Hinkel, 80, passed away on Sunday, October 23rd, 2022 at Reading Hospital. She was the loving wife of Eugene Hinkel, with whom she shared 54 years.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Violet (Woodring) Hartman. A graduate of Reading High School, Class of 1959, Carol worked for the Detective’s Department in Reading's City Hall until 1968. She left the workforce to raise her family, but realized a passion working at Reading Hospital later in life, first in the dietary department and then as a house mother for the student nurses' residence.

Carol lived for her family. Cookouts, holidays and birthday celebrations were always her most favorite thing in life. She was most happy when her family was all together, playing cards, enjoying a meal, and laughing together. She loved the sun and warm weather, and would often be seen sitting on the front porch on her swing or a chair, enjoying the weather. In her earlier days, she loved to walk, and was regularly seen in her neighborhood in Kenhorst walking one of her Dobermans.

Being a housemother to the Reading Hospital nursing students brought her immense joy as she was often told she was “their favorite housemother." Over the past few years, when she found herself unfortunately hospitalized on several occasions, one thing that made her smile despite being ill was when one of her nurses told her they recognized and remembered her.

She will be lovingly remembered by husband, Eugene; daughter, Shelly Nowotarski, wife of Bradley R., of Leesport; son, Shawn Hinkel, husband of Cheryl, of Bernville; grandson, Reese A. Nowotarski; and granddogs: Slingshot, Meeka, and Maui.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA, 19611. A prayer service and Celebration of Life will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Forest Hills Memorial Park will follow.
