Obituary for Catherine S. Zaharis

Catherine S. Zaharis, 98, passed away on May 27, 2021, in her Muhlenberg Twp. residence.

Her husband, Harry P. Zaharis, passed away on July 27, 2005.

Born in Indianapolis, IN, she was a daughter of the late Louis S. and Marianthe (Moskos) Sofianos.

She was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School in 1940 and attended McCann School of Business.

Catherine was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Reading where she sang in the choir and was a past president of the St. Xenia Philoptochos Society. She was also a past president of the Daughter of Penelope, Pottsville.

She was a member and volunteer of the Historical Society of Berks County and also volunteered at St. Joseph Living Center and at St. Joseph Medical Center. Catherine enjoyed painting, baking, knitting, crocheting, and was an avid reader.

Catherine is survived by three daughters: Stephanie Z. (Edward) Breen, Lebanon; Dr. Vlacia Z. (David) Campbell; and Demetria Z. (Daniel) Chupak, all of Reading. She was one of four children: Anna (Christopher) Carley (both deceased); Louis S. Sofianos, Jr. (deceased); and Vlacia T. (James, deceased) Tsakeris, West Lawn. She was blessed with six grandchildren: Stratton (deceased), Andrew, Mercena (Javier); Joshua (Melanie); Alexis, and Christian (Jennifer); and four great-grandchildren: Ethan, Jonah, Adalynn, and Orion. Four nieces: Cathy Tsakeris, Pamela Werle, Crisanne Bansner, Stavrula Crafa and a nephew Nick Laskarides also survive her.

Service will be Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1001 E. Wyomissing Blvd., Reading, PA 19611 at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. Contributions may be made to Sts.
