Obituary for Daniel W. "Dan" Hanley

Daniel W. Hanley Jr., 85, of Spring Township, passed away April 3, 2023, in Penn State Health St. Joseph
Medical Center.

He was the beloved husband of the late Evelyn M. (Krammes) Hanley, with whom he married in 1961; their love for each other obvious. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Daniel W. Hanley Sr. and Miriam N. (Pfleger) Hanley. Dan honorably served in the United States Army for six years.

Dan was a 1955 graduate of Reading High School and member of the tennis team. He also attended several schools of music, including, Lee College and Penn State, where his interest in gospel music grew. He played a great sax, his pride and joy, a French Selmer. He played all along the east coast, Kentucky, Texas, Michigan,
llinois and many other places. His wife was his accompanist, and they were known in many churches.

In his younger years, Dan worked with his father in the produce business. He started at the age of 10 on Danny’s produce truck and later with his dad, Uncle Babe and cousins, Lee and Richard, at the Shillington Farmer’s Market. He also traveled via tractor trailer with Eckert Produce (Douglassville) to many farmers’ markets to sell produce.

After his college days, Dan went on to be Music Director at Missionary Church in Shillington, for Pastor David Crosby. He was previously song director and Sunday School Superintendent at Church of God, Reading as well as Choir Director at Spring Valley Church of God. Dan worked for Acme Markets from his early 20’s and retired from Acme at age 59 as Assistant Manager.

Dan and his wife enjoyed many vacations together along ocean resorts and loved going out to eat. They had been married for 55 years. He enjoyed tennis, family gatherings, loved his wife’s cooking and spending time outdoors. Dan was a man of great faith, had a good sense of humor, and was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Dan and his family would like to thank all who cared for him in his later years and would like to leave you with a song in your heart, “I’ll Fly Away.”

He is survived by his three children: Lisa D., wife of Barry L. Eshelman, Spring Township; Daniel W. Hanley III, Kenhorst; and Deanna D., wife of Robert J. Koch Jr., Denver, PA. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Karen L. Eshelman, Susan E. Eshelman, Joshua A. Koch, Abigail R. Hanley, and Daniel W. Hanley IV; a great-grandson, Daniel M. Pronsky Jr.; sister, Linda, wife of Charles Filman and numerous nieces and nephews.
