Obituary for Dorothy G. Simmons (Spencer)

Dorothy G. (Spencer) Simmons, 92, formerly of Shillington, passed away peacefully at Elmcroft Senior Living, Exeter, on Monday, August 20. She was the widow of William F. Simmons; they were married September 16, 1950. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Roselen (Nangle) Spencer.

A graduate of St. Peter’s Reading Catholic High School, Dorothy worked as an administrative assistant at John Hancock Insurance, as a food service attendant at Holy Name High School, and volunteered at ManorCare Health Services, Sinking Spring, and at LaSalle Academy, Shillington.

She was a dedicated, lifelong member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Parish, Shillington, where Dorothy loved her front-row seat, always looking forward to seeing her friends, especially her Saturday morning Breakfast Club gals.

Throughout her life, Dorothy put the needs of others before her own. She was kind, caring and selfless, and loved to laugh. Dorothy was an avid Phillies fan. She enjoyed her time at Elmcroft, making a number of very special friends.

More than anything, Dorothy was totally devoted to her family, especially cherishing visits by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and family vacations at Wildwood Crest.

She is survived by her four children: son Robert, husband of Dolores, West Lawn, daughter Mary, wife of Thomas Wentzel, Reading, daughter Anne, wife of Kenneth Chubb, Wyomissing, and son Richard, husband of Carol, Blandon. Also surviving is a brother Edward Spencer, Ft. Washington, 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom enjoyed many a good laugh with her.

In addition to her husband, Dorothy was predeceased by a daughter Susan, wife of Richard Wrobel, and sons James and William Simmons, as well as sisters Elizabeth Spencer and Marguerite McDermott.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Friday, August 24 at St. John Baptist de la Salle Church, 420 Holland Street, Shillington. Friends may call Thursday evening, August 23 from 6:00-8:30pm and Friday morning from 8:30-9:30am at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, PA. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s honor may be made to St. John Baptist de la Salle Parish at the address above.
