Obituary for Dr. David J. Adams

Dr. David J. Adams, passed from this earth, on Christmas Eve, at his home in Phoenixville.

The middle son of Gertrude and Charles Adams, Dave was born June 22, 1937. Dave grew up in an adventurous and athletic household in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania with his brothers Peter and Bruce. Dave attended Sacred Heart School and Central Catholic High School (1956). Among Dave’s many athletic accomplishments, he was Pennsylvania State Javelin Champion, his junior and senior years.

Summers spent in Surf City, New Jersey gave Dave a lifelong love of the ocean, which he passed on to his children. Dave worked as a lifeguard and served as Captain of the Surf City Beach Patrol, where he met his first wife Patricia.

Dave attended Syracuse University on a Football Scholarship. A knee injury inspired him to transfer to Georgetown University, to pursue a career in medicine. Upon graduation from Temple Medical School (1964) and completion of his Residency in Training (1969); Dave accepted an appointment as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Patterson Army Hospital Fort Monmouth, serving as a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps (1969-71). Following his military service, Dave joined Orthopedic Associates of Bryn Mawr as a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, affiliated with Bryn Mawr Hospital. During his career, Dave particularly enjoyed the time he spent serving as one of the Physicians for Villanova University Athletics. Dave retired from the active practice of Medicine in 1998.

Back in the day, Dave was known to cause some mischief with his good friends, Bob Russell and Matt Boland. True to his Irish roots, Dave could tell a good story and enjoyed an occasional drink of Mount Gay Rum. In his free time, Dave enjoyed growing orchids, and building wooden models of historical sailing ships and boats.

Dave is survived by his loving and devoted wife of almost 29 years, Christine Adams, his brother Bruce and his wife Sue, his children: David, Brian and his wife Barbara Canellis, Sean, Kelly Phillips and her husband Kevin; step-daughters, Lisa Warren and her husband Patrick Hopkins, and Laura Maronic; grandchildren: Austin, Logan, and Morgan Adams; Dylan, Hope, Willow, Dean, Dale (his doppleganger) Phillips; and his step-grandchildren, William and Alice Warren.

Until our paths cross again.

A celebration of Dave’s life is planned for this Summer on Long Beach Island.
