Ellen Marie Vanszl passed away in the loving care of her family on August 4th, 2022.

Ellen lived a life dedicated to travel, education, and family. She was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, as the daughter of the late Louis and Josephine Verchot. Ellen graduated St. Josephs High School in 1950 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in English at Elms College in 1954 before earning a Masters Degree in English at Boston College in 1957. She went on to teach English internationally in Canada and Spain as well as across the United States. She retired after 18 years of teaching at Holy Name High School in Reading, PA.

After retiring she found joy in volunteering for the foster grandparent program at Millmont Elementary School where she encouraged a love of reading among students. Ellen loved spending time with her family, participating in weekly exercise and art classes, and creating family photo albums. She especially loved sharing her daily sunset photos and uplifting messages with her loyal Facebook following.

She is survived by her loving son, Vincent Vanszl, and her granddaughter, Nicole Abernathy as well as her great grandchildren Cohen, and Milo Abernathy. She is also survived by her brother, Louis Verchot and her many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her sister, Rosane A. Lorigan.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11am at Saint Catharine of Siena Chapel (2427 Perkiomen Avenue Reading, PA) followed by a celebration of life at B2 Bistro from 12pm-2pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that loved ones consider making a contribution to Berks Catholic at berkscatholic.org/giving.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Ellen’s care team at the Reading Hospital and Heartland Hospice as well as family and friends for their love and support.
