Obituary for Eugene F. Shober Jr.
Eugene F. Shober Jr., 73, Muhlenberg Township, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2020, at Reading Hospital. He was the loving husband of Susan (Brumbaugh) Shober.
Born February 5, 1947, in Reading he was the son of Eugene F. Shober Sr and Ethel (Sinton) Shober, both deceased.
He graduated from Governor Mifflin High School in 1965 and earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science from RACC in 2001.
Gene was an office equipment repairman while working for BCIU and Olivetti Corporation of America. He also worked in the cleanroom at Agere Systems, Allentown. He was a US Navy veteran serving as an Aviation Electronics Technician stationed in Okinawa.
In addition to his wife, Eugene is survived by his sons Mark Shober, husband of Courtney (Schmehl), Reading; Kevin Shober husband of Maggie (Surface), Knoxville TN; dooner, Los Angeles CA; daughters Cynthia (Keough) Smith, wife of William III, New Holland; Wendy (Keough) Griffin, Olney MD; Grandchildren Ashley Griffin, Jamison Griffin, Bronwyn Smith, and Thomas Shober; and sister Carolann (Shober) Lewis, wife of Gary, Elkton MD.
Gene enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandkids, helping to teach them how to drive, sharing his appreciation of nature, and building rocket ships out of cardboard boxes. He loved combining family time with his passion for camping, gardening, fishing, and stargazing. When not outside he could often be found in the kitchen baking and loved to modify recipes with his own twists. No two creations were ever the same despite “following the recipe.” Gene loved to help other people and his community. He frequently volunteered at the food pantry and was an active part of the Good Shepherd UCC faith community. He raised his family on the principle that you should treat others how you want to be treated and in doing so left his mark on all who met him. Gene was a gentle, generous giant who spread love through his words and actions, even if he jokingly had the nickname, Mean Gene. Other pastimes included eating copious amounts of donuts and ice cream and watching the beauty of cardinals and other birds, including his Philadelphia Eagles. He will carry his strong-will on forever in peace, watching over all he loved in his joyful, caring life.
Services are private at the convenience of the family and provided by Kuhn Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Gene’s memory to Good Shepherd UCC Building Memorial Fund, 170 Tuckerton Road, Reading PA, 19605. A public memorial service will be held at a later date.
