Obituary for Frank Mazurkiewicz

Print
Longtime Reading Times Editor and Writer Frank Mazurkiewicz, 83, of West Reading, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 27, 2018, in Reading Hospital with his loving family by his side. Born April 5, 1935 in Reading, Frank was a son of the late Walter P. and Genevieve (Peplowski) Mazurkiewicz. He had celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage to his loving wife Ann Marie (Troilo) Mazurkiewicz this past May.

After attending St. Mary’s School, Frank was a 1952 graduate of Reading’s Central Catholic High School. He served aboard the USS Salem for the U.S. Navy during a tour of duty in the Mediterranean, on the flagship of the 6th Fleet during the 1956-57 campaign, and later worked as a member of the USN Press Corps and was advance publicist for the Navy’s Blue Angels.

While enjoying his 50+ year journalism career at the Reading Eagle/Times, Frank also attended courses at Penn State University and the Columbia School of Journalism, NY. He was the consummate journalist, serving the newspaper in many capacities, including columnist, sports editor, front page editor and wire desk editor, before retiring. He had a great passion for writing insightful stories in his column “Sideline Views” about local high school athletes, especially scholastic football players.

He and Ann were members of Sacred Heart Parish, West Reading, for over 50 years, and he served the Church faithfully on the Parish Council, Adoration Society and numerous other organizations. Always one to give back to his community, Frank also served on the Reading Library Board, the Literary Council of Reading-Berks, the Reading/Berks Basketball Association, and the Berks County Aquatic Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame-Berks Chapter, the Polish Falcons and the YR Club.

Frank was a huge baseball fan, and a founder, and later inductee of the Reading Phillies Hall of Fame. As founder, he oversaw the induction of Reading baseball notables and legends such as Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski, and Rocky Colavito, among others, into the Hall.

Above all else, family was what Frank lived for. He was kind and loving, with a great sense of humor, and especially enjoyed summer family vacations at the Jersey Shore, where he excelled as a body surfer. His children and grandchildren were the lights of his life, and each will greatly miss him.

In addition to his wife, Frank is survived by their three children: son Robert, husband of Patti, Norwalk, CT; and daughters Debbie Carfagno, Exeter, and Michele Wojciechowski, West Reading; as well as a brother Walter S., husband of Joann, Ephrata. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Nicole, Michael, Kristine, Cassandra, Carly and Blaise, and one great-grandson, Mason.

He was predeceased by a sister, Monica Mazurkiewicz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 4, at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 740 Cherry Street, West Reading. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Reading. Friends may call Monday evening, December 3, from 6:00-8:00pm and Tuesday morning, 9:00-9:30am at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading.
