Obituary for Genevieve Dunkle (Kast)

Genevieve A. Dunkle, 92, passed peacefully on Friday, April 21, 2023, surrounded by family and caretakers at the Manor at the Heritage of Green Hills in Shillington, PA. Genevieve was born on July 16, 1930 to Louis and Dorothea Kast, and raised in Englewood NJ, along with her five siblings. She attended St. Cecilia’s Catholic High School and loved to share the ‘fun fact’ that the legendary Vince Lombardi was her science teacher.

At age 25, Genevieve met the man of her dreams, Richard L. Dunkle, who just happened to live in the same apartment building. They were married soon thereafter and went on to have four children, Nancy Miller (Richard) of Quakertown, PA, Kathleen Gill (Irv) of Exeter, PA, Richard L. Dunkle II (Vicki) of Sellersville, PA, and Laurie Waxler (Andrew) of Wyomissing, PA. They were married for 49 years, until Richard’s untimely passing in 2003.

An accomplished wife and mother, Genevieve was proud of her work as a “pink lady” at the Grandview Hospital in Sellersville where she volunteered hundreds of hours in the gift shop. She was also an avid self-taught knitter and spent many hours make baby caps for local hospitals. She and Richard loved nothing more than travelling the great 48 in their motorhome, always making sure to pull over at 1pm so Genevieve could watch All My Children, her favorite show. It was a family affair and often the topic of conversation at the dinner table until the show’s retirement in 2011.

Always known for a smile and a joke, Genevieve liked to have fun and was truly loved by her ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Known fondly in her family as “the Queen,” despite any setbacks in life, she always commented on the positives and how lucky she was in life. We will all miss her beautiful smile and her zest for life, but know she is at peace and has hopefully once again, found that man of her dreams in Heaven. The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Manor for all the love and compassion they shared with her, and with her family in her final days. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice in memory of Genevieve, to help make a difference in someone’s life.

A memorial service will be held at Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave., West Reading at 1pm on Saturday, April 29th.
