Obituary for George C. Fink Jr.

George Carl Fink, 93, of Bethel, passed away during the evening hours of Wednesday, April 5, 2023, in his residence. He was the widower of Beatrice I. (Bashore) Fink, and the companion of Susan Boyer.

Born in Hamburg to the late George Calvin and Rhea (Smith) Fink, George graduated from Hamburg High School in 1947 and married Beatrice later that year. From 1952 through 1954, George served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, and after his honorable discharge, he and Beatrice resided in Florida for several years with friends from his time in the Corps.

After moving back to Pennsylvania, George and his father began a small butcher shop until the house was demolished to make way for I78. In early 1955 George and Beatrice moved to Bethel. George previously worked for College Hill Poultry (now Bell & Evans) and Greth Meats before starting at PENNDOT. Starting as a laborer, he worked his way up to Heavy Equipment Operator and later to Crew Supervisor of the Hamburg Depot. During his retirement, he worked for the Bethel Township Road Crew, drove tri-axle dump truck, and drove school bus.

After the passing of his beloved wife in 2003, he led a grief class for St. Joseph’s Hospital alongside Susan Boyer, who was grieving the loss of her own husband. She and George became friends and eventually shared companionship for over 15 years.

Left to treasure George’s memory is his son, Michael G. Fink, husband of Carolyn, of Hamburg; granddaughters Angela Frymoyer (Jason) and Natalie Kelchner (Jacob), both of Hamburg; and great grandchildren Lyanna Frymoyer, Jackson Kelchner, Nora Kelchner, and one on the way. George is also survived by his companion, Susan Boyer, and her extended family.

Services for George will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Burkey-Driscoll Funeral Home, 40 S 4th Street, Hamburg PA 19526, with committal and military honors to follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Hamburg. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the start of services. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
