Obituary for Helen M. McGovern

Helen McGovern, 97, formerly of Cumru Township, died Wednesday evening in Berks Heim, where she had resided for four years.

The daughter of Jonas and Carrie Heffner, Helen grew up in Gouglersville, down the street from Trinity Lutheran Church, where she played the piano and sang in the choir.

A 1943 graduate of Shillington High School, she worked for various Berks County employers, most recently for Zuber & Company, PC. After retiring, Helen helped to care for her grandchildren.

She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Shillington, where she enjoyed the company of her circle of friends during coffee hour and Bible study. She also was fond of playing cards, going out for lunch or dinner, and spending time with her family.

Helen is survived by her son, Michael McGovern, and daughter-in-law, Susan, of Cumru Township; and her daughter, Karen McGovern Bontrager, of McMillan, Michigan. She was Meems and Grandma to her beloved grandchildren, Sara and Ryan McGovern, and Ryan’s wife, Megan; and Jonathan and Laura Bontrager. Also surviving is a great-granddaughter, Emma, in Michigan.

Each of her children and grandchildren have a blanket Helen crocheted for them, referred to by Sara and Ryan as their “Mimi blankets.”

Helen was well loved and will be missed. Her family thanks the staff of Berks Heim for their attentive care and kindness toward her. You all are deeply appreciated.

A service of remembrance will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be private. Kuhn Funeral Home, West Reading, is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
