Obituary for James Edward Walsh, Jr.

James Edward Walsh, Jr., 81, formerly of Spring Township and Nineveh, NY went to his heavenly home on February 24, 2022. Born in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late James E. Walsh Sr., and Margaret (Quirk) Walsh. His uncle Edwin Quirk also lived with his family and adored him.

Jim attended Bryant High School in Queens, NY, where he was a member of the ARISTA National Honor Society. In addition to his academic accomplishments, Jim was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and drill team. This student military organization sparked his interest in his country and the armed forces.

Following high school, Jim attended New York University. While at NYU he was a member of the Air Force ROTC program. He was initiated into the esteemed Military Honor Society Pershing Rifles, Company E Eight Regiment in 1959. Jim was an active member of this organization his entire life. The brotherhood of these men held a special place in his heart. While at NYU, Jim earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Arts degree in Education.

Jim used his engineering degree as an electrical engineer and an educator. He taught technical electronics at both the high school and college level. He also preformed research for the NJ Department of Education. Upon retirement, Jim was self-employed in his own business.

Jim was the loving husband of Phyllis-Ann. They were married on August 25, 1962. They were blessed with being together for more than 59 years of marriage. In addition to Phyllis, Jim is survived by his four children, Mary-Teresa Quesada, wife of Ruben Quesada, Ann Walsh-Lilley, wife of Mark Lilley, James Edward Walsh III, husband of Christine Walsh and Susan Walsh Smith, wife of Shawn Smith. Eleven grandchildren, Ruben Quesada, Mark Quesada, husband of Jesenia Quesada, Jonathan Quesada, Gabriel Quesada, Abby Lilley, Christopher Walsh, Justin Walsh, Daniel Walsh, Shawn Smith II, husband of Riley Smith, Scott Smith, husband of Cassy Smith, Eve Smith. Three great-granddaughters, Penelope, Milena and Gianna Quesada, and his nieces and nephews that he adored.

In addition to his love of God, family and country, Jim loved working with his animals. He and Phyllis established Corbec Farm where they bred and trained field Golden Retrievers. Jim enjoyed competing in sanctioned field trials, obedience trials, and confirmation dog shows. His latest achievement was an AKC confirmation championship on his youngest dog in August 2021. In addition to his dogs, Jim had horses. His horses Rio and Little Man competed in halter classes and team penning. His youngest horse Libby competed in dressage.

Jim’s colorful life included many military, civic and religious organizations. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, where he achieved the fourth degree. Jim’s lifetime achievements have touched the lives of all that knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, 2600 St. Albans Dr, Reading, PA 19609 with burial to follow at Laureldale Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, March 11, 2022, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, PA 19611 and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
