Obituary

James Nelson Shaw Jr., 92, of Sinking Spring, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, December 12, 2020, in the care of Reading Hospital. He was the widower of Louise M. (Frantz) Shaw, with whom he was blessed to share 65 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2013.

Born in Schuylkill Haven, he was a son of the late James Nelson Shaw Sr. and Charlotte (Bonowitz) Shaw.

Jim was a graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School. His most notable high school achievements were clearly demonstrated on the football field. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country honorably during World War II as an Infantry Truck Driver and Ski Patrol in Europe.

He was discharged from the Army in 1947, and less than a year later, Jim married his beloved Louise. They settled in the Reading area where they became members of Epiphany Lutheran Church, Temple. Later in life, they joined West Lawn United Methodist Church.

A member of the Steel Workers Union, Jim was employed by Dana Corporation as a crane operator for 40 years. In the evenings, he worked at the Reading YMCA as a lifeguard and water safety instructor.

Jim enjoyed time spent in the outdoors whether it was camping, canoeing, golf or tennis. He was a keen card player who enjoyed bridge but also was willing to learn new card games, even at age 90. But above all things, Jim most treasured spending time with his family.

Jim will be remembered by his four children: Sandra E. Phillips (Keith Phillips); Carolyn M. Seibert; Karen S. Fisher (Ronald Fisher); and David J. Shaw (Christine Shaw); six grandchildren: Kathryn Philips, Jack Seibert, Lee Seibert, Ryan Fisher, Brittany Mickulik (David Mickulik), and Nicholas Shaw (Olivia Shaw); and three great grandchildren: Mya Seibert, Liliana Mickulik, and Ella Mickulik.

He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Berger (Willis Berger) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, F. William Shaw, who is survived by his wife, Grace.

Due to the current health crisis, services for Jim will be announced at a later date. The Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences, tributes, and fond memories may be expressed at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
