Obituary for James V. Sparagana, Jr.

James V. Sparagana Jr., 93, of Cumru Township, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on July 18, 2023.

He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Sparagana, with whom he shared 65 loving years of marriage.

Born in Reading, he was the son of the late James and Carmella (Mancuso) Sparagana.

James was a devoted parishioner of Holy Rosary R. C. Church, Reading. He loved to attend Sunday mass and frequently talked about the warm welcome he would receive on a Sunday morning from church staff members.

Some of James’s favorite activities included going to breakfast at the local McDonald’s with his friends and family, taking vacations to both Wildwood Crest and Aruba with his wife, fishing, playing golf and sharing his many life stories. Above all else, he loved spending quality time with his children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was formerly employed by Pepsi Cola for nearly 40 years. During his retirement, he also worked as a bank courier for several local banks. He also took great joy in working as a bus driver for the Governor Mifflin School District and spoke often of how much he loved his coworkers and the children he transported. James served our country in the Army as a radio operator from 1951-1954.

James graduated from Reading Catholic High School in 1949 and later went on to become a basketball coach for Holy Rosary. He also served as an altar boy in his younger years and lecturer throughout his many years as a parishioner.

James is survived by his four children: Dianne M. Cwik, widow of Jody Cwik, Millsboro, DE; Maria C. Sparagana, Reading, PA; James V. Sparagana, III, Shillington, PA; and Cynthia S. Delehanty, wife of Mark Delehanty, Boyertown, PA.

He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Daniel, Jeffrey, Kristin, Lauren, Andrea, Taylor, Caitlin and James, and 11 great grandchildren: Haley, Autumn, Dominic, Gracie, Aubrey, Lincoln, Carson, Sophie, Liam, Isaac and Livinia.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Cambria) Sparagana, and his sister, Joanna (Sparagana) Cirulli.

His family takes great comfort in knowing he is at peace and reunited with his beloved Mary.

A viewing will be held Sunday, July 23, 2023, from 5-8pm and Monday, July 24, 2023, from 8:30-9:30am in the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, July 24, 2023, at 10 a.m., in Holy Rosary R.C. Church, 237 Franklin St., Reading, PA 19602, with burial info to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery.
