Obituary for Jeanette M. Hettinger

Jeanette M. Hettinger, 95, of Reading, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at The Highlands at Wyomissing. Born on April 6, 1927, in Wyomissing, PA, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Mamie B. (Miller) Hettinger.

Jeanette was a graduate of Wyomissing High School in 1945, and The Reading Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She worked as a staff nurse at the Reading Hospital until joining the United States Navy as a LTJG in February 1955. She served both stateside and overseas at many Naval Hospitals, including St. Albans, NY; Key West, FL; Philadelphia, PA; Puerto Rico; Beaufort, SC; Portsmouth, VA; and Taiwan. In March of 1975 Commander Jeanette M. Hettinger, USN retired and ended her Naval Nursing Career.

Jeanette was an avid golfer and tennis player. She was a terrific card player. Bridge, Marbles and Pinochle were among her favorites. She was an excellent cook, sharing her favorite recipes with family and friends. While enjoying her retirement, Jeanette and her two sisters took an extended trip throughout the United States and Western Canada to visit numerous relatives. Atonement Lutheran Church of Wyomissing, PA was a large part of her spiritual life. Jeanette made many friends during her residence at The Highlands. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.

Jeanette is survived by her nieces and nephews: Sandra Miller, Gary Luckenbill, Rodney Hettinger, Kimberly Jankowski, Richard Hettinger, Scott Hettinger and Anita Hettinger; 13 great nieces and nephews, and many great-great nieces and nephews.

Jeanette was predeceased by her siblings: Marguerite, Eugene, Robert (Mary), Mildred Luckenbill (Ray), and James (Norma).

Visitation will be Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, PA with military honors to begin at 3:30 PM. Burial will be held on Monday, August 15, at 1 PM at Bellemans Church Cemetery (3540 Bellemans Church Road Mohrsville 19541). Meet at NOON at Kuhn Funeral Home (739 Penn Ave West Reading 19611) for those who wish to follow the funeral car to the cemetery. Memorial Service on Saturday, August 27, at 11 AM at Atonement Lutheran Church of Wyomissing (5 Wyomissing Blvd 19610) followed by a 12:30 PM luncheon at Wyomissing Restaurant and Bakery (1245 Penn Ave 19610).
