Obituary for Joseph Spina

Joseph Spina, 89, of Wyomissing, Pa., passed away at Reading Hospital on May 24, 2021. He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (who died Feb. 18, 2021), and his sister, Verna Spina (2005).

Born on Sept. 27, 1931, the son of the late Ignazio and Rosaria Spina, Joe grew up in south Reading and attended Reading schools where he enjoyed playing football. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, serving in the 58th Engineer Floating Bridge Company.

As a young man, he worked at Berkshire Knitting Mills but eventually moved on to Rockwell International, finally retiring from there in 1994.

Joe was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary RC Church and the Victor Emmanuel II Society. Before and after his retirement, he enjoyed golfing with the Divot Diggers, and bowling with Rockwell’s Thursday night league. He delighted in tinkering around the house and woodworking – he made approximately 300 war era planes and many birdhouses.

Other activities that brought Joe joy: Playing the lottery, trips to the casinos, all types of food, watching sports, playing poker, and attending many church or VE II banquets, dances and picnics over the years.

Joe is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins who knew him to be quite the teaser and comedian. His family was so important to him, especially his parents, sister, and his beloved wife of 65 years with whom he has now rejoined.

The family wishes to thank his neighbors Katie Maher and Pat Kimball for their support and friendship over the past few years, and the staff at Peace of Mind.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church at address below, with a viewing preceding at 9:15 a.m. Entombment will follow at Gethsemane Mausoleum, Laureldale.
