Obituary for Joyce Horowitz

Joyce “Joy” Ann Horowitz, 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2022, surrounded by her family. God welcomed her joyously into Heaven and she was reunited with her mother, Juanita (Jones) Deal; dad, Charles Deal; brother, Dennis F. Abe; and other loved ones who passed before her.

Joy was born in Maryland and called many places throughout the US and Canada her home as her dad worked for the railroads. During her high school years, her parents settled in Verplanck, NY, which is where Joy felt most at home – on the Hudson River. These moves helped to shape the friendly, warm, and wonderful woman who loved meeting new people, “never met a stranger,” and left everyone she met, even if just for 5 minutes, feeling loved and special.

She was a trained dental assistant and worked for Dr. Laubach and Dr. Behrman in Reading, PA before taking time off to raise her 3 children. In 1986, she joined the Penn’s Commons Dental Group family and proudly served as a receptionist until her retirement in 2015.

Left to treasure her memory are her loving stepson, Kevin S. Horowitz, and his fiancé Kathy Lease; her son, A. Jason Horowitz; daughter Annah (Horowitz) Litzenberger, and her husband Michael; and cherished granddaughters Olivia Joy and Mackenzie Faith. She will also be deeply missed by her niece, Joy Abe and countless family and friends.

Here on earth, she was passionate and devoted to loving, caring, and bringing JOY to everyone’s lives and she did this in many ways; as the 1st Big Sister of Berks County, watching many of the neighborhood kids before and after school, actively participating as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 251, caring for those at the Caum Memorial Home, dropping everything to be by the side of anyone who needed help and most important to her – spending as much time as possible with her children and granddaughters – with Kevin as they bonded as mother and son, with Jason supporting him at Big Bear Promotions and with rugby, with Annah attending all of her sporting events and traveling together, and with Oliva and Mackenzie taking them to the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and “wooden park.” She was the “hostess with the mostest” and loved cooking and entertaining for her family and friends. Her homemade barbeque, macaroni and cheese, matzah ball soup, and famous pumpkin bread were always on the menu and loved by everyone.

Joy’s family is certain that God had a plan for her to watch over those she loves that need an angel. Please join us to celebrate the life of this beautiful angel – Joy.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19607.
