Obituary for Kathryn Jean Hiehle

Kathryn Jean “Kitty” Hiehle, passed away August 6, 2023, at The Highlands at Wyomissing.

Born in Fairmont, WV, she was the daughter of the late Frank Gustav and Erma Clifton (Henry) Hiehle.

Kathryn attended Duke University, Durham, NC, from 1947 to 1949 and graduated from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, in 1951, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.

She was employed by the Pan American Union from 1951 to 1960 as the secretary to the Chief of the Division of Economic Research. She was then recruited to the Inter-American Development Bank where she advanced to the position of Senior Editor in the Documentation Services Sector, Secretariat Department, using her multilingual expertise in translating text in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese to ensure bank documents were consistent with the original foreign language texts until her retirement in 1989. She further enjoyed extensive travel throughout Central and South American related to her work.

Kathryn used her proficiency in languages by volunteering for the Travelers Aid Society at National Airport, where she assisted both English speaking and non-English speaking travelers. She was an expert bridge player and loved traveling. Kathryn enjoyed visiting her vacation home in Virginia Beach and volunteering at the Virginia Beach Surf and Rescue Museum nearby.

She is survived by her brother, Dr. J. Frederick Hiehle, husband of Dolores “Dee” Hiehle and nieces and nephews: Dr. John Hiehle (Marcia), Frank Hiehle, III, Martha Watson (Tom), and Kristina Hiehle. Kitty was well loved by her family and all who knew her. She will be missed by her family and her dear friends, Jeanne Ailes and Jennifer Greer.

Kathryn was predeceased by her brother, Frank “Jerry” Hiehle, Jr. and her sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dotty” Hiehle.

Burial will take place at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont, WV on August 24, 2023.

A memorial service will be held in Wyomissing at a future date.
