Obituary for Larry Longlott

Print
Lawrence J. "Larry" Longlott, 87 of Wyomissing, made his final curtain call Tuesday, August 28, passing away peacefully at Reading Hospital following a lengthy illness. Larry was married for 63 fantastic years to Janis (Hart) Longlott. Born December 15, 1930 in Reading, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Johanna (Karish) Longlott.

Larry was a 1948 graduate of Reading High School, where his love for music blossomed as an all-state chorus tenor. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War in Guam, and appearing in the Navy Quartet.

But it was upon discharge from the service that Larry’s love for performing flourished. He studied voice with Herman Miller, while performing with the Sylvanians, and dramatics with Bruce McLean and Terry Reedy.

While he certainly could have lit up Broadway, Larry stayed at home and found his true love on local stages, especially with Reading Civic Opera and later, Reading Civic Theatre. He starred in many lead roles, with some of his favorite (and most famous) shows being “The Music Man,” “Carousel,” “Man of La Mancha,” “1776,” and “Sweeney Todd.”

When not on stage, Larry enjoyed numerous golf outings and fishing, especially with his family on Lake Magaguadavic in Canada. He was a longtime member of Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing.

Larry worked for over 16 years at Vicary’s Men’s Shop in West Reading, where he honed his sales skills, and thoroughly enjoyed after work festivities with his co-workers and friends, particularly at the old West Reading Hotel. Larry left Vicary’s to become co-owner of Longlott & Friedman Associates, Inc., on 5th Avenue in New York, manufacturer’s representatives for over 15 lines of quality giftware over a nine-state territory.

In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by their daughter Kimberly J. Longlott, Mohnton, his beautiful granddaughter Mallory J. Fredericks, Philadelphia, and his overfed cat Tori. A true animal lover, Larry is now reunited with what he called his “favorite people”: doggies Cocoa, Pookie and Haji, kitties Frank and Ernest, and horses Rose and Woody.

A Celebration of Larry’s life well-lived will be held Saturday, September 8 at Atonement Lutheran Church beginning at 11:00am. Friends may call from 10:00-11:00am at the Church. Burial will be private at the convenience of his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s honor may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County at www.arl.org, or to the Humane Society of Berks County, 1801 N. 11th Street, Reading, PA 19604 https://humanepa.org/donations/online-donations.

The Longlott family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Country Meadows, and Berks Heim's Essick Commons for their enduring love and care of Larry, and for helping them through this very difficult time.

Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, PA, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
