Obituary for Margaret McAllister

Margaret R. McAllister, 109, passed away peacefully at her home in Pottsville on November 6, 2023.

Born in Edwardsville, PA, she was a daughter of the late Robert R. and Mary Ann (Jones) Richards. Margaret attended Edwardsville High School where she proudly graduated in 1932.

On September 1, 1939, Margaret married E. Leroy McAllister and started a family. Margaret was a devoted wife and mother.

Fulfilled by her role as homemaker, Margaret kept a warm and inviting home; was a wonderful cook; and never hesitated to bake her delicious chocolate chip cookies upon request. She could often be found outside tending to her yard or enjoying time on the porch with her husband, Leroy. Although she was content to be at home, Margaret never passed up the opportunity to travel with her family and particularly enjoyed going to the shore.

Later in life she discovered the joy of genealogy, which included three fact-finding trips to Wales allowing her to finally complete her family tree. Known as GG to her great-grandchildren, she reveled in the joy they brought to her life.

Margaret led her life with faith, kindness, humor and strength and was a long-time member of Park Road Presbyterian Church. Her example taught those around her how to live a meaningful life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, including her miniature poodle Louie, who was never far from her side. Her family feels blessed to have had her for so many years.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Leroy, infant daughter Kay Ann, sister Catharine Evans, brother Robert R. Richards and son-in-law Anthony P. Mikes, husband of Mary Ruth.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ruth Mikes, Wyomissing, and Deborah Shields (Cal), with whom Margaret resided in Pottsville. There are five grandchildren: Laurie Kay Plaggenborg (Johannes), Heather Ann Miller (Matthew), Jennifer Mullen (Jeremy), Emily Flood (Andrew), and Ethan Brown (Desiree); and seven great-grandchildren: Peter (21), Jack (20), Jamie (15), Nicholas (15), Aidan (12), Adaline (8), and Isabella (1 week).

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is honored to assist the McAllister family. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
