Obituary for Mariano Torres Jr.

Mariano Torres Jr. was a funny, caring soul. The simplest pleasures in life brought him great joy and his love of making people laugh was his calling. Junior, as he was affectionately known by family and friends has passed away at the age of 52 on January 12, 2021. He was a proud graduate of St. Peter’s School in Reading and Reading Central Catholic where he graduated in 1987. After graduation he entered the workforce working for St. Peter’s Church, Farr’s nursery, and for over 20 years worked in the Reading School District until he retired.

Junior had two great loves, a great love for his family and his love of sports. He was an avid sports fan. A lifelong member of his own 5 for 5 Club, he followed his favorite major sports & college teams: The Eagles, Phillies, Sixers, Penn State Nittany Lion football team, and his beloved North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. Junior was an encyclopedia of sports knowledge and trivia and always enjoyed a good verbal debate and lively discussions. In our local sports scene everyone knew Junior. There was not a venue he could enter without being recognized by someone and hearing people yelling his name, “Junior!” He was known to frequent Fightin Phils baseball games and Reading Royal hockey games and rarely missed a scholastic high school or grade school game that his nieces and nephews played in. He is recognized as one of the best basketball players to ever lace them up for St. Peters CYO basketball team in Reading. What has become folklore over the years is Junior’s claim that he holds the individual single season scoring record of all time at St. Peter’s. Reminding his close circle of friends with a smile across his face that he accomplished this feat before the 3-point line was instituted in CYO basketball.

Junior was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, husband, step-father, teammate, co-worker and faithful friend to all who were blessed to know him. He was a man who was a child at heart. He lived for always trying to brighten everyone’s day around him with a joke and a smile. He gave love and grace to all unconditionally and could always be counted on when you needed him. He was a man of faith. Lived his life with love and compassion in his heart for all. His legacy will live on in all of us.

Junior is survived by his parents: Mariano and Aida Torres; siblings: Raquel Lopez, Armando Torres, and Lourdes Cordova; nephews, nieces, and a host of cousins, aunts, uncles, family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Junior's memory.

Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is honored to assist Junior's family. Condolences may be expressed at

I worked with Jr at the Reading School District. He always had a smile on his face, joked with people. I have never seen he get mad. He was a very friendly guy and will be missed by many. Greg Eagle

I'm so sorry to hear of Mariano's passing. Junior was a custodian where I used to teach. He always had a smile and would often stop to chat with me about football. He would do anything for you. Such a kind soul. He will be missed.
