Obituary for Marie H. Hadley (Mackowiak)

Marie Hadley, 96, a lifelong resident of the Reading area, passed away at the Reading Hospital on Thursday, September 8, 2022, after a short stay. A resident of Phoebe Berks in Wernersville since 2010, she maintained a lovely cottage there before entering Personal Care six months ago. Born in 1926 to the late John Mackowiak and Maude May (Wolf) Mackowiak, she was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, class of 1944. She was most recently a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church.

Having raised her two children and two stepchildren, Marie’s life was filled with challenges and diverse paths of interest and talents. She retired in 1989 as an interior designer for John H. Schach Rugs and Carpets. People will remember her by her generosity and words of compassion and empathy toward others.

A passionate and avid bridge player, she rarely missed opportunities to play. In recent years, she would also be seen playing billiards with family and friends at Phoebe. Marie would have been called a “Snow Bird” before moving to Phoebe, and she enjoyed many years of traveling with her late husband, Chester Hadley, by motorhome throughout much of North America, enjoying the diversity our great country has to offer.

Left to treasure her memory are her children: daughter, Beverly (Ernst) King of Bowmansville, PA; son, Alan Ernst and spouse Jane, of Easton, MD; step- daughter, Deborah Clay of Exeter Township; and step-son, John Polumbo, living abroad. Marie is also survived by four grandchildren, one step grandchild, six great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Chester, and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John Mack.

Rest in peace Marie; your forever warm smile toward friends and acquaintances will be truly missed.

A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, with committal to follow at Forest Hills memorial Park. Family, friends, and others whose lives Marie touched are invited to gather at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
