Martin graduated from Reading High School in 1950 and went on to study at University of Pennsylvania, earning his Bachelors of Science in 1954, and he later earned his Doctorate of Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1958. While in college, Martin supported himself by working summers at Keystone Produce.

Upon his graduation from medical school, Dr. Spangler began his Resident Internship at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 1959 he opened his own general practice, which he kept until 1988. He was a member of the Medical Staff of the Community General Hospital from 1960, and stayed on through the hospital’s transition to St. Joseph in 1998. He served at the Medical Director of the Methadone Clinic at Community General Hospital from 1992 until 1996, the Medical Director of Community Health Center and STD Clinic from 1983 until 1998, and the Medical Director of the Methadone Clinic at New Beginnings from 1996 until 2000. In 1998 he became Medical Director of St. Joseph’s Health Center until his retirement in 2000.

In 1986 Dr. Spangler was approved by the Civil Service to perform Immigration Examinations. His first 712 examinations were for Mexican Immigrants who were granted Amnesty. From 1986 until his retirement in 2000, Dr. Spangler preformed over 2000 examinations on immigrants from around the world.

When not caring for his patients, Martin enjoyed hunting and trap shooting. He won several trap shooting awards (class A) in major tournaments, both local and at state level.

In addition to his wife, Julia, Martin will be remembered by his children, David B. (Wendy) of Shillington and Sandy L. (Maurice Riley Jr.) of Reading, and his grandchildren Brian and Amy.
