Obituary for Mary E. Campbell

Mary E. (Ulrich) Campbell, 94, formerly of Reading, passed away July 18, 2022, at Berks Heim.
Her husband, Alexander Campbell, Jr., died on May 31, 2011.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late G. Raymond and Martha (Adam) Ulrich.
She was a graduate of Reading High School in 1945 and Kutztown State Teachers College in 1949 where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Mary was employed by the Reading School District teaching kindergarten, first and second grades. She later became the first Program Director of the Head Start Program, developing and organizing the criteria which still today educates thousands of students. Mary retired in 1982.

She served as former superintendent of St. Mark’s United Church of Christ Sunday School as well as past secretary of the Glenside Community Association. For many years, Mary also worked side by side with her brother, John Ulrich, at Big John’s Restaurant and Catering.

She is survived by two children, David Campbell, Shillington and Louise (Campbell), wife of David Ludwig, Mohnton; six grandchildren: Jennifer (Campbell) McIntosh, Rebecca Campbell, Lauren (Ludwig) Conrad, Tara Ludwig, Gabrielle Campbell and Meghann Campbell; and six great-grandchildren: Madeline, Alex, Isabelle and Elaina Campbell, and Logan and Carson Conrad.

Mary was predeceased by her son, Bruce Campbell on September 1, 2001; and two brothers, John Ulrich and Raymond Ulrich.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Berks Heim, particularly those on A-1 and Essick Commons, for their consummate care and compassion during Mary’s seven years there.

Services will be Tuesday July 26, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading with burial to follow at Berks County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Monday July 25, 2022, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
