Obituary for Mary Kontaxes (Architas)

Mary Kontaxes, 95, formerly of Wyomissing, passed away on Dec. 22 at Phoebe Allentown.

Her husband, Nicholas Kontaxes, died on Oct. 7, 1988. Mary and Nick were married 42 years.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Stamatia (Maroulakeli) Architas. She was a 1945 graduate of Reading High School and earned her Associate’s degree at Reading Area Community College.

Mary was a lifelong member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church and its St. Xenia Philoptochos Society. She was involved in volunteer activities for the church and Phoebe Berks in Wernersville, where she lived for many years.

Mary was a kind and gentle person whose life centered around her family.
She enjoyed art and painting and was a docent at Reading Museum. An avid walker, Mary enjoyed traveling, gardening and cooking for her family. She worked in the quality control lab for Glidden Corporation in Reading.

Mary is survived by four children: Athena (Richard) Wagner, Seabrook Island, SC; Katherine (Gary) Kunkelman, Seabrook Island, SC; Cynthia (Stephen) Richart, Emmaus; and Michael P. (Grace) Kontaxes, Allentown. There are five grandchildren: Stephanie (Kyran) Mitchell; Melissa (Thomas) VanArsdale; Matthew (Jacquelyn) Kunkelman; Alexandria Richart (Aaron Coble); and Andrew (Melissa) Richart, and nine great-grandchildren: Kyran, Stephen, Cali, Nicholas, Joseph, Sophia, Oliver, Leo, and Evan. She was predeceased by grandson Stephen Copeland.

Services will be Thursday, December 29, 2022, at 11 at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1001 East Wyomissing Blvd., Reading, PA 19611, with burial to follow at Charles Evans Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Contributions may be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Church at the above address. Edward J.
