Obituary for Maurice D. Stone
Maurice D. "Moe" Stone, Esquire, 57, passed away at the Reading Hospital on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.
He was the husband of Rebecca Batdorf Stone, Esquire, for 31 years.
Born in Statesville, NC, he was the son of Janice E. Wood, N. Wilkesboro, NC, and the late Garland G. Stone.
Moe was a 1981 graduate of North Wilkes High School, Hayes, NC, and he received an Associate of Applied Science degree in criminal justice in 1983 from Wilkes Community College, Wilkesboro, NC. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Gardner-Webb University, Boiling Springs, NC, in 1986.
In 1990, he earned a Juris Doctor degree with distinction from Ohio Northern University's Claude W. Pettit College of Law, Ada, Ohio. Moe graduated fifth in his class of 111 students and was a member of the Wills Society for students who graduate in the top ten percent of the class. In addition to numerous academic achievement awards and an academic scholarship, Moe was awarded six American jurisprudence awards that indicate the highest grade in the class for each of the following classes: Civil Rights, Criminal Procedure, Trial Advocacy, Evidence, Constitutional Law II, and Property II.
Moe began his career in the Wilkes County, NC, Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff. From 1984-1987, he served as a police officer/special operations agent and criminal investigator for the City of Hickory, NC. Through that position, Moe attended the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg, NC, for basic training which included over 400 hours of paramilitary training. Moe graduated as the Valedictorian of the class and received the highest score in both legal training and firearms proficiency training. Additionally, he was awarded the North Carolina intermediate training certificate for extensive training in law enforcement in the following areas: serial murders, covert investigation, fingerprint evidence, speed timing devices and evidence collection and preservation.
He was the Assistant District Attorney for Berks County from 1990-91 under the late George Yatron, and was assigned to the trial division. He also served as the Conflicts Counsel for the Berks County Public Defender's Office, representing indigent defendants with a conflict of interest with clients of the Berks County Public Defender's Office.
Moe was a mental health hearing officer for Schuylkill County, PA, from 1991-2004.
Moe opened his private practice on Lancaster Avenue in Shillington in 1990. He concentrated on criminal law at this location until his retirement in 2018.
In 1996, he was the chairman for the Democratic Party in Berks County. In 2004, he appeared before the United States Supreme Court, Washington, D.C. and was admitted to the practicing bar of the court in a special ceremony.
In addition to his wife, his beloved dog, Allie, and mother, he is also survived by one brother, Rodney E. Stone and his wife, Karen, N. Wilkesboro, N.C. and his nephew, Derrick G. Perry, his wife, Kellie, and great niece, Natalie F. Perry, Millers Creek, NC.
