Obituary for Melinda Russell

Melinda Russell, 58, passed away at home, surrounded by her family, Sunday, June 5th, 2022. She was the loving wife of Scott Stump with whom she shared 28 years of marriage.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the James and Enikő (Bornemisza) Russell. She grew up with a love of nature and became a keen observer of the living world. She loved walking, kayaking, horseback riding and competing in CDE combined driving. She surrounded herself with pets and was kind to animals of all species.

She graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Arts and worked as a graphic designer. She enjoyed and supported the arts and was a talented artist herself. Melinda was a prolific and talented photographer, painter, designer and illustrator. In addition to her artistic achievements, Melinda was also a skilled problem solver, troubleshooting and repairing broken technology and appliances for herself and others. She also worked as a caregiver, and devoted herself to helping both family members and others lead fuller lives.

Melinda will be remembered by her husband, Scott Stump; daughter, Alexandra Clare Russell Stump; son, Bennett Cole Russell Stump (Abby Shope); grandchildren Marley and Ellie; parents James and Enikő Russell; brother, John B. Russell (Dr. Ann Van Allen Russell and daughter Mariska); and sister, Zolna Russell (Dan, Sophie and Griffin Cargnel). In addition to her family, Melinda was supported by many close friends who loved her, and helped her battle her cancer.

In keeping with her desire to protect the environment, Melinda chose a natural burial at the St. Kateri Tekakwitha section of Gethsemane Cemetery in Laureldale. She will rest surrounded by wildflowers, birds, butterflies and animals. The burial was private.

Melinda suffered from depression and became an advocate for mental health awareness. She worked to support others who shared that suffering. In lieu of flowers, Melinda's family requests donations be made in her memory to NAMI, Berks County, PA https://namiberkspa.org/ or to Animal Rescue Inc, https://animalrescueinc.org/

There will be a Celebration of Life on Labor Day weekend, 2022. Details to be announced. If you wish to attend, please contact Griffin Cargnel at gcargnel12@gmail.com to receive an invitation.
