Obituary for Paula M. Szortyka

Paula Mastey Szortyka, born March 27, 1929 in Luzerne, PA to Helen and Joseph Mastey, sister Lorraine Kultys.

As a youth Paula was an accomplished accordionist who along with her sister on clarinet worked at many weddings throughout the county.

Valedictorian of her high school class, she attended Misericordia University in 1947.

On June 25, 1949, she married Stanley and shared 69 years of a loving relationship. She was by his side when they started their business, Quaker Maid Meats, Inc. in 1960.

Paula returned to college at Albright and completed her degree in 1976. She graduated from Temple Law School in 1980 at the age of 51. She was the first female ADA in Reading, where she practiced for 25 years. Her years of experience and knowledge was shared with many new attorneys starting their careers in the District Attorney's Office.

Paula was respected for her integrity and dedication to doing the right thing. Paula enjoyed her many animals throughout the years as well as her neighborhood feral cat colony. A special thanks to her Angels for their kindness and compassion over the past several months. RIP Mama P!

She is survived by her children, S. Sergei, married to Linda F. (Davis) Szortyka, and P. Nancy, married to Schuyler Deale, Shillington. Two grandchildren, Colette, married to Victoria Nitti, and Natashja, married to Andrew Price, and two great-grandchildren,
Gary and Alexsandr. One niece and three nephews also survive her.
