Obituary for Peggy Ann Reifsnyder (Von Dohren)

Peggy Ann Reifsnyder, daughter of Rudolph and Ada (Shearer) Von Dohren of Oley, was born at Reading Hospital on June 26, 1931. She grew up on the family farm where she enjoyed riding her horse, Prince (16 hands high), swimming, ice skating, bringing eggs to the weight counter, and gardening.

Peggy graduated from Oley High School and then graduated from Reading Hospital School of Nursing, where she met the love of her life, Doctor Bill. She worked at Wernersville State Hospital prior to her marriage in 1953 at Frieden's Lutheran Church in Oley.

She lived in apartments in Rochester, Minnesota working as a surgical nurse at Methodist Hospital with surgeons Dr. Meyers and Lofren while Bill finished his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

She then lived on Hunter Air Force Base (Strategic Air Command), Savannah, Georgia, with Captain Bill.

Peggy returned to Reading in 1958 and moved to Wyomissing in 1962. She enjoyed Saturday night dancing at Sunnybrook during the Big Band Era.

Peggy had a “green thumb." On the farm she enjoyed the vegetable garden. In Wyomissing, she enjoyed working the soil planting pachysandra ivy and myrtle plants of all kinds - geraniums, coleus, etc. Flowers including rose, marigolds, tulips, and others helped to fill a room in her home. Outdoors she adored azaleas and rhododendron.

In 1985 she traveled to Germany and Austria with the Trinity Lutheran group from Reading led by Pastor Elton Richards for the 500th anniversary of “The Oberammergau." There, in Munich, she visited with a cousin Wolfgang, an orthopedic surgeon and his family.

She and the children relished swimming in the Wyomissing Pool in the summer and ice skating at the pond at the Stone House in the winter. Vacations at Stone Harbor, N.J. were remembered fondly.

In later years, she played bridge with the Shillington group and played the piano into her 80’s.

She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church since 1958. She assisted in Sunday School and committees and witnessed both daughters walking down the aisle.

Peggy had four children: Diane (deceased); Joan and her spouse John Lundin; Bruce (deceased) and his spouse Diane; and Anne Dean; six grandchildren: Adam, Benjamin, Amiee, William, Mary, and Stephanie; nine great-grandchildren; one brother Peter of Oley; and two nephews, Craig and Barry Von Dohren,

Services and burial at Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown will be private at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to Reading Hospital School of Nursing, Atonement Lutheran Church, Alzheimer's Association, or the The Highlands at Wyomissing Endowment Fund. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is honored to assist the Reifsnyder family. Condolences may be expressed at www.kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
