Richard K. Bretz, 69, of Sinking Spring, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2022, in the care of Reading Hospital. He was the attentive and thoughtful husband of JoAnn (Cieniewicz), with whom he shared a loving marriage of over 30 years.
Born in Reading to the late Calvin A. Bretz, husband of Kathryn Bretz, and the late Shirley Ann (Coller), Rick graduated from Fleetwood High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War Era and was awarded the rank of Sergeant.
Rick was an authentic, generous person who believed in taking the time to do something right. A thoughtful man, he frequently had lively discussions on how to solve the world’s problems. He was protective and kind with a sense of humor that made it easy for him to be social.
He enjoyed tinkering in his workshop, and he was a skilled woodworker and made beautiful rocking horses for his family.
Rick was a lifetime member of the Reading Motorcycle Club and a member of the National Hot Rod Association. He was something of a car buff and took great joy in maintaining the immaculate condition of his vehicles.
He enjoyed time well spent with good friends. He and JoAnn attended Philadelphia Phillies games. Much to Rick’s own surprise, he became a cat person, and treasured his cats.
In addition to his wife, JoAnn, Rick was survived by several siblings and other family. He was particularly inspired by his uncle, Ret. Cmdr. James S. Turner Jr USN, and shared humor with close friends, Tom and Gary. Rick was predeceased by his good friend and brother-in-law, Larry Cieniewicz, who is survived by his wife, Billie.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rick's memory may be made to the Animal Rescue League, 58 Kennel Rd, Birdsboro, PA 19508, or to Western Berks Ambulance Association, 2506 Belmont Ave, Reading, PA 19609.
Services for Rick will be private at the convenience of his family. He will be laid to rest at Pleasant View Cemetery. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
