Obituary for Richard "Mike" Sterner

Richard “Mike” A. Sterner, 81, of Orwigsburg, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023, in the care of Penn State St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He was the loving husband of LaVerne F. (Schickram) Sterner.

Born to the late Arthur J. and Grace E. (Overdorf) Sterner, Mike worked as a trucker driver for over 30 years. He started his career as a door-to-door milkman at the age of 13 for Anthony’s Dairy of Strausstown. He later worked for the Hamburg Broom Works, the Hamburg Plow Works as a molder, and drove for Branch Motors, CEX, and New Penn. He retired from Clover Farms Dairy in 2003, but he continued farming in his spare time. After marrying LaVerne in 1963, he also started working for his father in law at Schickram’s Meats.

He was a member of St. John’s Church of Port Clinton.

Mike was a Free and Accepted Mason of Lodge 138 of Orwigsburg. He was also a member of the Deer Lake and West Brunswick Fire Company as well as Port Clinton Fire Company and served for 45 years as a Forest Fire Warden.

Mike’s memory will be treasured by his wife, LaVerne, and their daughter, Fay A. Seltzer (Michael) of Orwigsburg. Mike is also survived by his brother, Robert K. Sterner. He will be greatly missed by Bitsy, his ball-playing partner. He was predeceased by his brother, John R. Sterner.

Services for Richard will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Burkey-Driscoll Funeral Home, 40 S 4th Street, Hamburg PA 19526, with committal to follow at St. John’s Cemetery of Hamburg.
