Obituary for Robert Edward Thomas

Robert Edward Thomas, age 79, of Saylorsburg, PA died peacefully at home in the presence of family on April 8, 2024. Born May 7, 1944, in Shenandoah Heights, PA, Robert was the son of the late Phaon Thomas and Florence (Becker) Thomas. A child of the atomic age, Robert enjoyed spinning wrenches, questioning authority, farming, and soaking in the early sounds of rock ‘n’ roll. He graduated from Mahanoy Area High School in 1962 and spent the latter part of the '60s stationed in Okinawa as a US servicemen supporting communications. After the army, he immersed himself in advanced studies including calculus, physics, psychology and astronomy. He built a career designing and repairing electronics, teaching at LTI, and ultimately retiring from Lafayette College after 30 years in the chemistry and geology labs.

His idols ranged from Albert Einstein and Jacques Cousteau to Evel Knievel. Robert was a lover of nature, from the microscopic to the cosmic. His happiest moments were spent in the sun tending his garden, exploring nature, hiking, looking under rocks and swimming the waters of eastern PA with his high school friend turned bride. Robert was inventive, always eager to delve into philosophical discussions with anyone willing to engage in contemplating the universe or chatting about one his many interests. He was a critical thinker with a curious mind and meticulous nature. He had a bleak outlook on politics, a sarcastic sense of humor and a love for motorcycles and loud music. He will always be a guiding light in our hearts. His family and friends will miss him very very much.

He is survived by his partner of 60 years, Betty Lou (Faust); his daughter Jennifer and her husband Michael Haas of Lowell, VT; his son Christopher; granddaughter Lovella; and daughter-in-law, Amelia Thomas of Bath, PA. He is also survived by his sister, Susie Millard; nephews Brian and Jason Millard and their families; his sister and brother-in-law, Ethel Mae and Weldon Bazemore; niece Sonja and family; half brothers Billy and Eric Thomas and families, and many cousins.

A celebration of life will be held at a later time in the “hot summer sun”. Donations in Robert’s memory can be made to The Nature Conservancy, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network PANcan, or Cancer Commons.
