Obituary for Robin Lloyd Kaplan

Robin L. Kaplan, 72, of Wyomissing, PA passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Columbia Cottage, Wyomissing, where he resided since May.

Born May 2, 1950 in Providence, RI, he was the son of Solomon and Gladys (Wilcon) Kaplan.

Robin was survived by his wife of 33 years, Lori (Staron) Kaplan and two sons: Saul Daniel and fiancée Jennifer Miller of Lemoyne, PA and Nathaniel John and wife Emma Block Kaplan of Jersey City, NJ; his mother, Gladys; two brothers: Drew (wife Bonnie) of Narragansett, RI and Andrew (wife Naomi) of West Warwick, RI; two nephews: Benjamin (wife Krista) and Stuart (wife Dana) and a niece, Lindsay (husband Javier and son, Max) Decima.

Dr. Kaplan was a magna cum laude graduate of Boston University and Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his medical internship at San Francisco General Hospital and his medical residency at University of California, San Francisco. From 1977 to 1980, he was a clinical fellow, then senior fellow in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Colorado Medical Center, where he also served on the faculty. He was board certified by the American Board of Medical Examiners, achieving three board certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, an associate fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Heart Association.

Dr. Kaplan started his own medical practice, Berks-Schuylkill Respiratory Specialists in Reading and Carbondale, PA in 1980, and served as the Chief of Pulmonary Medicine at Saint Joseph Hospital, now Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center. During that time, he served on the Board of Directors of the Berks County Chapter of the American Lung Association and the President of the Board of Directors of the Medical-Dental Bureau of Berks County. In 1991, Dr. Kaplan earned a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from St. Joseph University, Philadelphia, and left private practice in January 1992 to become the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Saint Joseph Hospital.

In 1995 Robin and his family moved to Chicago, IL where he served as the Medical Director of the Michael Reese/Sykes Medical Center on the south-side of Chicago. 1997 brought the family back east to Annapolis, MD, where Robin served in various medical administrative positions before becoming involved as a partner and medical auditor for FairCode Associates, LLC. Robin expanded the reach of the company into the Pennsylvania market, which brought him full circle back to Reading, PA. He worked for FairCode until Parkinson’s Disease forced him to retire in 2019.

Outside of work, Robin had a passion for travel and had visited five continents - his favorite travels taking him to Italy and the south of France. He loved opera and classical music, and was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Society and the Friends of the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years. Art museums were a great draw to Robin, as were great restaurants all over the world.

At home, Robin loved to bake, and his fruit pies were famous among friends and family. He was an avid reader, and took great delight in hosting dinners at home, especially the Seven Fish Feast his wife prepared for numerous guests on Christmas Eve.

Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his sons.

Robin’s family would like to give special thanks to the caring staff at Columbia Cottage and Caring Hospice, who provided Robin with excellent care at the end of his life; to Dr. Lloyd Wolf, Dr. Joseph Mariglio, Dr. Ronald Krol, and Dr. David Young and their staffs who provided excellent care to Robin throughout the last 15 years since his return to Reading; and to Allison Maurer, physical therapist at Penn State St, Joe’s, who kept Robin strong and mobile throughout his struggles with Parkinson’s.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research at michaeljfox.org or Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, 117 Morgan Drive, Reading, PA 19608 or helpingharvest.org.
