Obituary for Roland Mark Guercia

After a 10 year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Roland "Sonny" M. Guercia,57, passed away peacefully at his New Hyde Park, New York home with his wife Maria and children Alexa (24) and Jake (20) by his side.

After securing many opportunities with the airline and air cargo business, Sonny retired early as

Sonny was born and raised in West Reading, Pennsylvania and was preceded in death by his parents Roland
A. and Mary R. (Petrassi) Guercia and older brother, Richard.

Sonny was a 1980 graduate and star basketball player for Holy Name High School and participated in the West Reading Summer Basketball League. As an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan like his father, Sonny was able to see the Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2017.

Sonny is survived by his sisters, Jane (Guercia) Thomas, wife of Scott; Joanne (Guercia) Plack, wife of William; and Mary T. (Guercia) Naugle, wife of John. In addition, Sonny is fondly remembered as Uncle Sonny by his nieces, nephews, and great-nephews, Jennifer (Machemer) and Stephan Chmielewski, Sharon Machemer, Nicholas Guercia, Aubrey Noel Naugle, Brody Stuck, and Logan Chmielewski.

Sonny’s funeral arrangements were handled by Park Funeral Chapel in New Hyde Park, New York. Sonny is interned at Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, New York. Condolences and fond memories may be expressed at

Dear Maria and family I would like to express my deepest sympathy on the passing of Sonny. I have many fond memories of Sonny and his family. One of those memories involved me getting his mother and grandmother to your engagement party. This was before gps navigation, what a trip! I new after taking the same exit twice Sonny's directions were off. Thank God for his mother and grandmother and their rosary beads and prayers.Sonny and I shared a common bond for sports. His passion was basketball. He was a fiery competitor on the court but after the game he never held a grudge everything was left on the court. Was truly a blessing to have Sonny as a friend. Maria I remember meeting you and your family and how warm and welcoming your family was to Maria and I. May God bless you and your family during these tough times.
We will keep you in our prayers.
Sincerely, Steven &Maria

Sonny- growing up in West Reading, you were one of my first heroes, just as you still are today. From watching you at the WR courts, Holy Name and then on to when you coached me, your heart and positivity were infectious. I will always remember your smile and quick wit. You were a mentor, a coach and a friend to me. To others, you were a great husband, father, co-worker and friend. We will all miss you! Here’s to the olives in heaven.

Sonny Guercia passed away. Only 57 years old. My 2nd player to die from our great Sacred Heart boys basketball dynasty days. Jimmy Buckley was my first player to pass. 10 years with ALS. It’s such a horrible disease. You battled Sonny. You truly battled. You were always a great Warrior. Coach Lloyd Wolf and I tried to see you about 5 years ago. We really tried. We wanted to show you how much we loved you. We wanted to be there. But you were too ill to see us. You were a really good kid! You were one of my all time favorite players. And always will be. You wanted to be a player. You wanted to be great. That’s all a coach can ever ask for. We were both West Reading guys. You and me Sonny. We were Sacred Heart guys. We were Holy Name basketball players. We all had a special bond that will never be broken. Never. We all miss you Sonny. I shall think of you every time I walk past your house on S. 7th Ave. May your sisters be consoled knowing that you are now in heaven hooping it up with the angels with Coach Wolf yelling to get back on defense. We will never forget you Sonny. Special men are never forgotten. Please pray for all of us as I shall for you. Until we see each other again my brother. Your friend and Coach, Kevin Calabria
