Obituary for Rolland D. Ackelson

Rolland D. “Ack” Ackelson, 95, of Wyomissing, died February 23, 2022.

He was married to LaVerna Y. “Bernie” (Bier) Ackelson for over 70 years.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late James S. and Laura M. (MacPherson) Ackelson.

Rolland served our nation proudly and valiantly in the US Army during World War II in the European Theatre as a combat infantryman earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart; interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

After receiving a Juris Doctorate degree from University of Pittsburgh, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania and Michigan Bar Associations. Following several years in private practice and a judicial clerkship, he spent the remainder of his career in Trust/Fiduciary banking, retiring from several banks, the last of which was National Bank of Boyertown. He taught fiduciary law, on an adjunct basis at several colleges and at the Pennsylvania Bankers Association School of Banking.

He was most “at home”, however, working for several summers in the hardware section of F.H. Gillingham’s, a general store in Woodstock, Vermont.

He was a member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children: R. Duane Jr., husband of Sharon Ackelson, Wyomissing; Laura A. Gay, Virginia Beach, VA; Judson D., husband of Debbie Ackelson, Greenfields; Paige M. Ackelson, wife of Ed Babczak, La Plata, MD; and James A., husband of Dawn Ackelson, Chesapeake, VA; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by two siblings, Dr. J. Stuart Ackelson and Carole Schwoerer, and his longtime childhood friend, Ernest J. Bauschman.

At Rolland’s request, service will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, Florida 32256 or Lincoln Park United Methodist Church – Endowment Fund, 1 Carlisle Ave, Reading, PA 19609.
