Obituary for Ronald N. Weitzel

Ronald N. Weitzel, 89, of Wyomissing, passed away on Monday, April 11, 2022, in his home. He married Shirley A. (Wanner) on October 22, 1955, and shared 67 loving years together.

Born to the late Paul R. and Ruth N. (Weyandt) Weitzel, Ron graduated from Wyomissing High School in 1950, and Ursinus College in 1959. Serving in Germany during the Korean War, Ron was a proud Army veteran.

He worked as a human resources consultant for 15 years for Gilbert Associates (now Parson Corp.), retiring in 1995. Previously he was employed by Polymer Corp., Penn Optical, and Mack Trucks, Inc.

Ron was very proud of his 12-year tenure as Mayor of the Borough of Wyomissing from 1994 until 2005. He served as the former VP of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and belonged to many community fraternities, including St. John’s Masonic Lodge 435 as a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite, and Rajah Shrine. Beginning in 1995 he oversaw a screening clinic to determine children’s needs for hospitalization. Acting as a “Shepherd,” he transported the mothers and children to and from the hospital.

An active member of St. Thomas U.C.C., Reading, Ron served as former VP of the Consistory and sang with the choir since 1949. He coordinated St. Thomas’s ESL program and the Even Start Program assisting Spanish families assimilate to American culture. Ron and Shirley later joined St. John’s Reformed Church after St. Thomas’s closure.

A dedicated family man, Ron treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren, and he was completely devoted to Shirley.

Left to treasure Ronald’s memory is his wife, Shirley; their children: Sandra L. Weitzel of Wyomissing; Marjorie A. Kern of Mohnton; and Steven R. Weitzel of Exeter; grandchildren: Zachary Kern, Tyler Kern, Paul M. Weitzel, and Alexandra G. Weitzel; and one great granddaughter, Luna Rose Kern. Ron is also survived by his sister, Evelyn L. Bordner, widow of Carlen. He was predeceased by his brothers Paul D. Weitzel and Barry C. Weitzel, who is survived by his widow, Carol.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, with burial to follow at Laureldale Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. Friends of the family may visit Friday, April 15, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Masonic Rites to be rendered at 6:30 p.m. A second visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the start of services.
