Obituary for Sylvester George Gerhart

Sylvester George Gerhart, 91, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021, in his Berkshire Heights residence, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the beloved husband of Kathryn C. (Kramer) Gerhart.

Born in Penn Township, he was the son of the late Earl S. and Debbie (Dickinson) Gerhart.

Sylvester was a graduate of Reading High School.

He was a member of Bern Reformed United Church of Christ.

Sylvester was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was a lifetime member of the Berks County Fireman's Association, a life time member and past president of Mt. Pleasant Fire Company, and a life time member, assistant chief, chief, and trustee of the Berkshire Heights Fire Company.

Sylvester enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and clamming. He and his wife traveled cross country twice together, visiting every state except four. Most of all, he enjoyed his time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and attending all of their sporting events.

In addition to his wife, Kathryn, Sylvester is survived by two children: a son Jody L. Gerhart, companion of Mary Shuman, Berkshire Heights; and a daughter, Sharon L. Emerick. Berkshire Heights. Six grandchildren: Jeremy, Sandy, Alicia, David, Nicholas, and Samantha, and twelve great grandchildren also survive him.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda D. Gerhart, in 1953, and a brother, Stanley Gerhart.

A funeral service will be held Monday, May 17, 2021, at Kuhn Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, at 2 P.M. Burial will follow in Bern Cemetery. A viewing will be held two hours prior to the service in the funeral home from 12 P.M. to 2 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sylvester's honor to Bern Reformed United Church of Christ, 3196 Bernville Road (Rt. 183), Leesport, PA 19533.
