Obituary for Thomas F. Downey
Thomas F. Downey, 93, passed away on January 15, 2023, at Penn State Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Ann E. (Haughney) Downey. They married on May 10, 1958 and were together until her passing on September 5, 2009.
Born in Mahanoy City, PA he was the son of the late Malachi and Mary (Faye) Downey. Thomas served his country in the Army in the Korean War. After his service he worked a variety of jobs: as a coal miner in Mahanoy City, a book binder at Arnold’s Book Bindery in Reading, and most recently at Carpenter Technology in the annealing department.
Thomas was a boxer and enjoyed following the sport. He also loved fishing and gardening. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. In his later years, he took up scrap metal hauling.
Survivors include his four children: Thomas Downey of Bradenton, FL; Rita Downey of Reading; James “J.D.” Downey, husband of Jacqulyn, of Reading; and Ann “Missy” Ortiz of Reading, his sister, Helen Pagano of Waterbury, CT, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Thomas was predeceased by five of his siblings: Joseph, Malachi, John, Rose Russell, and Mary Printz.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Kuhn Funeral Home & Crematory, 5153 Kutztown Road, Temple, with burial to follow at Berks County Memorial Garden.
