Obituary for Richard E. "Monk" Gernert

Richard E. “Monk” Gernert passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was the husband of Patricia (Turner) Gernert; they were married on December 24, 1955.

Born in Reading on September 12, 1928, he was the son of the late Edward Sylvester Gernert and Evelyn (Baisch) Gernert.

After graduating from Reading High School and attending Temple University where he played football, basketball, and baseball, Dick carved out a 10-year career as a major league baseball player. He came to the majors with his parent organization, the Boston Red Sox and continued his career with the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, playing in the 1961 World Series against the New York Yankees, and ended his playing career with the first expansion team, the Houston Colts. Dick remained in professional baseball working for the Washington Senators, the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets where he ended his 52 years in baseball.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Heather Jackman, wife of P. Michael Jackman; and three grandsons, John, James and Max, all residing in Yardley Pennsylvania.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 8, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading; a celebration of Dick's life will begin at 12 p.m. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
