Obituary for David R. Perella

David R. Perella
David R. Perella, 75, of Shillington, passed away on March 30, 2018, in the Reading Hospital.

Dave was the beloved husband of Joyce A. (Lamm) Perella. The couple recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Jeremy, husband of Lia Perella, Spring Twp.;and daughter, Jennifer, wife of Aaron Flook, Bloomsburg; and three grandchildren: Cecelia (6), Tessa (8), and Ella (6), who knew him as “Papa Dave”.

He is also survived by sister, Lois, wife of Charles Ebbert, Shillington; brother, Richard Perella, Macungie; sister-in-law Judith Goedeke, Bernville; and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Reading, Dave was the son of the late Rudolph and Anne (Verdone) Perella. After graduating from Reading High School in 1959, Dave was self-employed as a painter and wallpaper hanger until he retired in 2007. He served in the National Guard from June of 1964 to February of 1970.

“Teach your children well” ~ Crosby, Stills and Nash
Dave was very involved in his children’s athletics; coaching many of their teams and always present on the sidelines. He was their biggest fan, and often, their most honest critic. It was his involvement that drove both of his children to be successful and driven on the field, court and diamond, as well as off.

Another love of Dave’s was music. A self-taught guitarist, harmonica player, and singer, Dave shared his love of harmony and classic rock with his family. The yearly Perella Christmas party always ended with a jam session; the family gathered around playing music and singing songs from bands like Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Eagles and Jimmy Buffett. This is a tradition that influenced not only his children, but all of his nieces and nephews as well. It will continue as a fitting memorial to Dad every year.

These same songs could be heard from the garage on warm summer days as Dave mastered another love, woodworking. Many pieces of furniture in his home, and his children’s homes, were handcrafted by Dave. He often joked that someone else could have made three pieces of furniture in the time it took him to perfect one but the finished product was always beautiful and will be family heirlooms for generations to come.

In lieu of a traditional viewing and funeral, a pig roast will be held in his memory, at a later date. In true Dave fasion, good food, good music and good friendship will be enjoyed. “A sea of friends are singing, Vaya con dios, Mis amigos, We take their hopes and feelings, To some new world, We’ll be revealing” ~ Beyond the End, Jimmy Buffett
