Obituary for James J. Smithgall
James. J. Smithgall, 87, of Wyomissing, passed away June 4, 2018, at the Virtua Memorial Hospital, Marlton, NJ.
He was married to Janet M.(Magrini) Smithgall for 63 years. Janet passed away earlier this year.
Born in Lancaster, PA James was the eldest son of the late James and Helen (Gerhart) Smithgall, and brother of the late John Smithgall.
He was a graduate of Lancaster High School and Penn State University, earning a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree. As a Registered Architect and Engineer, he was a proud member of the American Institute of Architects. His career spanned more that 50 years, and his professional accomplishments included many residential and commercial projects including Wyomissing High School and projects for the Boscov family.
He is survived by three sons: Dr. Francis J. husband of Dr. Francine Paladino Smithgall, Cherry Hill, NJ; Prof. Thomas E. husband of Amy L Smithgall, Wexford, PA; and Edward P. husband of Aracely Smithgall, Seattle, WA. Six grandchildren: Dr. Marie, Benjamin husband of Clementina, Madeline, William, Michael and Nicholas also survive him.
Services will be held Saturday June 9, 2018, at 10:00 AM at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc. 739 Penn Ave., West Reading , PA. A viewing will be held Saturday from 9:00-10:00 AM at the Kuhn Funeral Home. Burial will be private at Gethsemane Cemetery. Contributions in James' memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
